Nyaho Medical Centre Recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is internationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), and major breast cancer charities use this opportunity every year to raise awareness about the disease and to raise funds to carry out further research into its prevention, treatment and cure.

Nyaho Medical Centre decided to carry out its own campaign in 2010 to raise awareness amongst its staff and patients about the disease. All members of staff were given customized Nyaho versions of the classic pink BCAM pin to wear, and patients were given small cards with pins to wear and to give to their loved ones and friends.

Nyaho Medical Centre ensured to provide the necessary education alongside the outward vestiges of the campaign, by supplying educative material to staff in their departments, and around the centre, in waiting rooms, bathrooms and corridors. Some of these materials included a customized Nyaho Flyer emphasizing three basic methods for Breast Cancer detection (ie., Touch, Look and Check), and flyers, brochures and posters from AstraZeneca.

Staff and clients were encouraged to perform a monthly breast cancer check on their own and to go for regular check-ups. Nyaho Medical Centre has medical imaging services that can be used to detect signs of breast cancer.
